The words, man

It was a summer night in Deia, the tiny village on the north-west coast of Mallorca most famous for being where poet Robert Graves lived. I performed my spoken word poetry as Sundog Radio with a couple of friends. We shared the bill with English poet Roger McGough – a most generous man. When I told Roger I preferred to perform backed by people making strange noises, he said “It’s all about the words, man.”

I have no doubt that lessons learned from my years as a commercial writer inform my weird and, I hope, wonderful spoken word stuff and vice-versa. One feeds the other. Roger’s right. It is all about the words, man. Earlier this year, I interviewed Roger for a blog I write about Deia, a place known for a certain kind of bohemian excessiveness. He tells a great story about meeting Robert Graves. You might like it.
