Down the road
Do you have an adolescent obsession you’ve never quite outgrown? I do and it’s the Beat writing of Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and the gang. A couple of years ago I stopped being embarrassed about my love of the Beats and started writing about them. I was lucky enough to find the wonderful Beatscene magazine and to have my articles about the Beats read all over the world.
In 2011 I followed in the footsteps of the Beats to Tangier and interviewed a cantankerous old painter named Mrabet, friend to the American writer Paul Bowles. Next I went to the tiny Moroccan village of Joujouka, the source of a kind of healing music legendary worldwide. In 2014 I was invited to give a paper on Mrabet and Burroughs at a Tangier conference. Don’t give up on your obsessions, kids.
